AVX announces its latest multilayer varistor SMD solution for overvoltage protection in high-temperature applications. The VT Series now expands the temperature range of overvoltage protection to 175° C.
AVX leads the way for multilayer varistor devices by incorporating a modified grain boundary to the zinc oxide based ceramic semiconductor material that is reliable at high temperatures. Grain size and boundary interface correspond to clamping voltage, and multiple values are available.
This unique design expresses qualities of back-to-back zener diodes in the on-state, with the added benefit of greater current and energy withstanding properties. In the off-state, the monolithic construction of electrodes and ceramic layers offer EMC benefits, obsoleting the need for discrete TVS diodes and EM filter capacitor on a communications bus.
AVX High Temperature 175°C Multi-Layer Varistors are designed for under hood and other high temperature automotive or industrial applications. Parts are AEC-Q200 qualified. They offer bi-directional overvoltage protection as well as EMI/RFI attenuation in a single SMT package. This allows designers the ability to combine the circuit protection and EMI/RFI attenuation function into a single highly reliable device. Products have been tested, qualified, and specified to 175ºC and they do not require any derating over specified operating temperature range.
Available in 0603 and 0805 case size with 18Vdc and 31Vdc working voltage, energy rating 0.1J and 0.3J, peak current 30 – 120A and capacitance 90 – 450pF. Operating temperature range is -55°C to +175°C with no derating. Parts offer excellent lead free solderability thanks to Ni Barrier/100% Sn termination.
